I am a proponent of change. I believe that every mail manager looks for opportunities to expand and enhance the services they provide to their campuses. Having completed the merger of our mailing and printing operations I continue to look for ways to increase the value and variety of services we provide our campus. To me, the friends and contacts I’ve made through NACUMS plays an important role in this goal. I began working for my university in a mailing related field in the early 1970’s. In 1978 I was asked to head the University's postal operations. In 1979, I was a Panelist at the National Postal Forum and presented a case-study on presort utilization at the College & University session. I again presented at the 1987 NPF speaking to the challenges medium size companies face when modernizing their mail operations.
Over the past ten years, I have served in many roles within NACUMS. I started out as the CUMSA Representative to the Board and later served as Vice President, President, and now as an At Large Member of the Board of Directors. I have one year left on my board term which I will resign if elected to the position of Vice President. This September 30th will mark my 25th year as Director of Mail Operations at WFUBMC. Including the time I spent at Wachovia Bank as an Assistant Mail Manager, I have 32 years of service within the mailing industry. In 1994, I received the CMDSM certification. The CMM certification was completed in 2001. It has been my pleasure to help many of our college and university mailing industry colleagues become CMM certified. I am one of the people recognized by the IPMA to proctor the CMM test. It gives me great pleasure to see leaders in our industry get recognition from having earned their professional certifications. NACUMS is at a critical point in its existence. Many mistakenly view NACUMS as being at its pinnacle of success because it has some money in the bank and has held a few successful conferences. However, I think the hardest part is still ahead of us and that we need those who possess an understanding of NACUMS past and a vision for its future in current leadership roles.

I have been the Manager of Mail Services for five years and currently active in my local PCC and SWACUMS. I currently supervise five people with no student workers and service our campus community. Before accepting this position, standard operations were taking place such as delivery and first –class mail. I have enhanced this operations by implementing bulk facilities in house, presorting all mail, coordinating with outside carriers to receive the most cost effective prices for the University. NACUMS is a wonderful organization and offers so much knowledge and expertise. I have been a member since 2000 and have benefited from everyone sharing their experiences. I would like to serve NACUMS by giving back my time and expertise.

Sam Cox - DOB 4-12-65. Graduated from The University of Memphis (then Memphis State University) with a BBA in Management in 1988. Came to work for the University in November 1991 as the Athletic Ticket Manager. In March 2000, was promoted to Director of Mail Services and Reprographics. Shortly thereafter, I realized the need to become involved in professional organizations. I joined NACUMS and attended my first conference in Orlando where I was introduced to many mailing professionals as well as my regional organization, CUMSA. I have served on the board of CUMSA for the past three years as Treasurer (2002-2003) and Member At-Large (2003-2004, 2004-2005). In December 2003, I was promoted to Director of Auxiliary Services which added contract management, food vending, and copier vending to my current job duties. I am a 27-year veteran of the mailing business at Oklahoma State University. I started out mailing warehouse shipments for the Cooperative Extension Service on campus. I moved to working with the University’s bulk mailings about 20 years ago. In 1992, we combined operations with the Campus Post Office. Since then we have added small parcel delivery. Our operation covers everything from dorm mail, to campus delivery, to Contract Window. I have worked with or supervised all of them. I currently oversee the mailing operations. This includes inbound and outbound USPS, FedEx, DHL and outbound UPS as well as bulk mailing. With a variety of tasks like this the challenges come daily (if not hourly). We have all grown from meeting them. I have known of NACUMS since its inception and have been a member most of those years. I remember that our organization was formed to unify the voice of colleges and universities across the nation, provide a network of knowledgeable people to call upon when the challenges seemed overwhelming, and provide training and education about new trends in the industry. I would be honored to serve the NACUMS membership as a board member. I would strive to remember the purposes of our organization as I helped to guide us toward the future.

I spend what little free time I have hunting and fishing on our small farm, where I plan to retire to some day in the distant future. My name is Ute Franklin and I am the Assistant Manager of Delivery Services at Rice University in Houston, Texas. I am a German citizen and have lived in the United States since 1979. Since then I have served as a mail clerk, assistant supervisor, and supervisor. I have been the supervisor of the Central Mail Service for the last 15 years. My staff includes ten full-time employees and one part-time student employee. At Central Mail Service, we process over four million pieces of incoming USPS and campus mail and over two million pieces of outgoing mail each year. My activities in NACUMS span almost five years.. Serving three years on the Nomination Committee and currently serving with the Benchmark and Membership Committees. I have also been active in UMMA on the Membership Committee. I bring to NACUMS a vast knowledge gained while employed at the Madison, WI Post Office (ten years ). As Mail Center Lead Worker at MATC , I find myself using the knowledge gained working as a MPLSM Operator ; in Central Forwarding Systems (CFS), Passports, a pilot site Postal Business Center, Express Mail, City Operations, Marketing and Acting Account Manager almost daily. One of the issues needing expansion is the internal communication of the Board with the membership. It could be beneficial to present an annual Treasury Report and a Profit and Loss Summary of the previous year’s conference. Every dues paying member could benefit from knowing exactly how monies are budgeted for them to promote this profession. Continued growth in membership continues to be a priority. Every member has innovative ideas, needs and contributions that all can use to learn and grow. Personal accomplishments include: 2004 MATC “Outstanding Employee of the Year”, inducted into Phi Theta Kappa in February 2004 for maintaining a 4.0 GPA, nominated three times by the USPS for the National College Mail Managers award and for Industry Best In Class and have actively served the Greater Madison Area PCC for five years (four as Industry Chair ). I am currently enrolled in Marketing – Supervisory Management.
