OVERVIEW
Northern Virginia Community College is an open-access; comprehensive community college offering two-year associate degrees, one-year certificates and career studies certificates, as well as continuing education and community services programs.
With six campuses, an extended learning institute and two satellite classroom centers, NVCC boasts a multitude of programs of study that meet the standard for transfer to baccalaureate degree programs in four-year colleges and universities. In addition, the College offers developmental courses to assist students in honing the necessary skills to insure their success at NVCC and beyond. NVCC’s workforce development office focuses on meeting the needs of the area’s businesses and industries, and community service/continuing education courses cater to the public at large, with programs designed for all ages.
The College annually serves 60,000 students in credit courses and an additional 250,000 in non-credit courses and/or public service activities. NVCC is the largest institution of higher education in Virginia and the second-largest community college in the nation.
POSTAL/WAREHOUSE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
Main Location – CW 202 AN – The Annandale Campus location provides services to all six campuses, the Extended Learning Institute, two satellite locations, and the College financial aid, workforce development, and e nterprise centers. Service includes inter-departmental, inter-campus, all U.S. mail franked classified under First Class mail, non-profit standard mail “A”, packaging, special and international services, and packages shipped by all classes of UPS. The CW 202-AN location is staffed with six full-time and two part-time employees. All employees are cross-trained for all phases of the operations: p ostal, warehousing, distribution services, stores, archives, fleet operations, paper recycling and property administration.
The College offers an “express” delivery to every location once a day for time-sensitive documents placed in a locked bag; routine mail is delivered on a standard daily schedule. (Mail is delivered and picked up in the afternoon and brought back to the Annandale Campus location for processing and distribution.) Each Campus has its own internal postal and distribution operation, staffed according to the size of the population it serves, responsible for accepting and distributing incoming correspondence and packages.
Postal operation figures for fiscal year 2004-05 show the total pieces of mail processed numbering 11,250,813. Outgoing USPS mail accounted for the bulk of it, numbering some 5.3 million pieces. Incoming USPS mail added up to nearly 3.3 million pieces, with intercampus mail accounting for another 2.6 million. In addition, the warehouse and distribution system handled more than 26,500 shipments.
